CJD guidelines
Task:
Preparation (injection) of remains

Body condition:
Intact

Exposure level
3 (Medium)

Recommendation:
We recommend the body not be prepared by arterial injection.

Universal precautions/PPE recommended
Minimum:

  • Gloves
  • Gown
  • Facemask/eye shield
  • Head and shoe covers.
  • Procedure: (If injection is attempted)
  • Restrict embalming room access to necessary personnel only.
  • Follow preparation procedures as indicated by body condition.
  • Fluid strength, quantity and dilution will be determined by overall condition of the body, since this will have no effect on the CJD prion.
  • Use drain hose to sewer system to minimize exposure to blood.
  • Minimize the number of instruments used.
  • Do not aspirate body
  • Containerize and dispose of all instruments, tubes, hoses, needles, etc.
  • Place all gloves and other PPE in sealed plastic bag for disposal.
  • Clean table and other embalming room surfaces with Clorox.
  • Wash hands with disinfectant soap.
  • Note: There are no practical procedures available to ensure destruction of the prion once it has contaminated the preparation room.

    Body condition:
    Intact

    Exposure level
    2 (Low)

    Recommendation:
    We recommend the body not be prepared by arterial injection. This method reduces the level of exposure if injection is attempted.

    Universal precautions/PPE recommended
    Minimum:

  • Gloves.
  • Gown.
  • Facemask/eye shield.
  • Head and shoe covers.
  • Procedure: (If injection is attempted)
  • Restrict embalming room access to necessary personnel only.
  • Inject body with no drainage.*
  • Do not aspirate body.
  • Minimize the number of instruments used.
  • Containerize and dispose of all instruments, tubes, needles, etc.
  • Clean table and other embalming room surfaces with Clorox.
  • Place all gloves and other PPE in sealed plastic bag for disposal.
  • Note: There are no practical procedures available to ensure destruction of the prion once it has contaminated the preparation room.

    Recommendation:
    Preparation and/or restoration of the body should not be attempted and is strongly discouraged.

  • Shoe covers.
  • Procedure: (If injection is attempted)
  • Restrict embalming room access to necessary personnel only.
  • Minimize the number of instruments used.
