Task:
Removal of remains
Body condition:
Intact
Exposure level
0-1 (Negligible/very low)
Recommendation:
The body can be removed and transported with little if any risk to mortuary personnel.
Universal precautions/PPE recommended
Minimum:
Gloves.
Face mask or barrier cloth over face of the deceased.
Additional protective clothing and equipment as indicated.
Procedure:
Follow basic sanitary procedures that should be utilized on any removal:
Cover the cot surface with a protective plastic such as a casket cover.
Transfer remains to cot. Wrap body completely in protective plastic to
eliminate contact with the cot.
Place used gloves and other PPE in sealed plastic bag for later disposal.
Wash hands with disinfectant soap.
Transport.
If the body exhibits any bleeding, open wounds, or other leakage, a body
pouch is recommended.
Leave body wrapped until disposition is determined.
Disinfect cot with Clorox.

Exposure level
2 (low) if body is pouched to 4 (high) if mortuary personnel must directly handle remains.
Recommendation:
The body can be removed and transported, but extra precautions are warranted.
Universal precautions/PPE recommended
Minimum:
Gloves.
Face mask or barrier cloth over face of the deceased.
Additional protective clothing and equipment as indicated.
Procedure:
The hospital or autopsy facility should be asked to place the remains in a
body pouch taking care not to contaminate the outside of the pouch. The
removal personnel should monitor this task to observe any contamination
of the outside of the pouch.
Hospital or autopsy facility should retain all organs removed, especially the brain.
This pouch should then be placed in an outer pouch to further insure no contamination of the cot.
Place used gloves and other PPE in sealed plastic bag for later disposal.
Wash hands with disinfectant soap.
Transport.
Leave body pouched until disposition is determined.
Disinfect cot with Clorox.
